Input would be appreciated.

As I think about my options for what to do with my life, I keep ruling out more and more careers. They always say that if there's something you can do besides writing, you probably should. Now I'm starting to think that I may actually be unsuitable for everything, so I'm thinking about writing a book about my time in Japan based off of a lot of the material here, but building on it. Is that crazy? I also thought about revising a couple entries and submitting them places, but I could only think of a couple places to submit (which would be total longshots anyway) and the ones I like I think are way too long to submit anywhere.

You should definitely write this book. You should definitely submit to magazines. (I've got suggestions if you want 'em.)

Unequivocally, (r)

I would go with both tactics... if you do get some short pieces in I think it would help to convince someone to take a whole book. But I don't think you have anything to lose by trying either.

Yes, suggestions please! I need guidance. Also, good point, Eileen. I mapped out what a book might look like, and it definitely works, but I realized that it would be a huge project, and a good portion of it would be really really painful to write. I think it would help if I could get some shorter pieces published, if I knew more than two places to submit.

Have you considered sending an email to some of the faculty you worked with at Macalester? They would probably have some good ideas about places to submit work.

And I'm sure they'd be more than happy to help out. We all want our students to succeed and become bright stars that we can point to with pride.

I probably shouldn't be the one to give any advice since I gave up on my dream after college and created a new one. Will I always have that "What If?" follow me around forever? Probably. But you keep going.

I would write anything and everything if I were you. But I think it's really hard to find a career where you can make money with what your passionate about so its probably best to find a career that makes you as happy as possible. Once again, I'm no one to give advice.

Check out from the library: "Novel and Short Story Writer's Market."

It has a boss number of magazines and publishers.

I am not good at organizing thoughts. You seem to really have a great way with expression via writing. I also got to experience Japan, although not for very long, I still feel the pull of Japan's culture. If you can write and enjoy doing it, make it a focus and go for it, gambatte kudasai
